Weather Policy

Our purpose is to provide you- our guest- with an intimate yet comfortable contact with nature ... earth, sea, fire and wind. Most weather conditions form a part of this positive experience of the elements ... even an unexpected storm can be a thrilling spectacle!

However, continuous rain can dampen the spirits even the most optimistic of guests (and crew) and we have developed a "rule of thumb" to avoid these extremes.

Rules:

  1. If the Bureau of Meterology weather forecast prediction is "fine" or for "showers" and "light" to "moderate" winds, then we have found that (usually) the tour is successful and we go ahead.
  2. However, if the word "rain" is included in the forecast, then we have found it is best to postpone or cancel the tour. In the case of the Great Barrier Reef tour to Lady Musgrave Island, if winds 30 knots or above are predicted then we may also cancel.
  3. Sometimes, the decision is not straight forward. For example, the forecast may be for rain on the first night of the tour, but clearing to fine conditions early on the second day. In this case we would probably go. But if the rain or heavy showers are predicted for most of the tour we would probably cancel.
  4. Sometimes the Bureau of Meterology gets it wrong. They may predict fine weather or a few showers so we go, but then it pours with rain. Conversely, they may predict rain so we cancel ... and it turns out fine. Contrary to most people's skeptical attitude to the Bureau of Meterology, we have found them to be pretty accurate most of the time. But you can't accurately predict all of the weather all of the time.
