Livingston: the new Expedition Ship destination in the Caribbean.

Let’s embark on an expedition to Livingston, Guatemala, a captivating destination that seamlessly blends culture, natural beauty, and history. As your expedition cruise ship approaches this coastal gem, passengers are greeted by a vibrant tapestry of experiences:

1. Livingston Town:

  • Cultural Melting Pot: Livingston, nestled at the mouth of the Río Dulce, is a melting pot of cultures. Here, the Garifuna people thrive alongside Afro-Caribbean, Maya, and Ladino communities. Their lively music, spirited dances, and rich oral traditions create an enchanting atmosphere.

  • Unspoiled Charm: Unlike other bustling ports, Livingston remains unspoiled by overland access. Visitors arrive via motorboats (lanchas) from Rio Dulce, adding an adventurous touch to their journey.

  • UNESCO-Recognized Heritage: The lively Garifuna music, akin to reggae, and their rhythmic dances have been classified as “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO.

2. Garifuna Culture:

  • Origins and Ancestry: The Garifuna people trace their roots to indigenous Arawak, Kalinago (Island Carib), and Afro-Caribbean heritage. Their unique blend of African rhythms, spirituality, and culinary delights infuses Livingston with authenticity.

  • Language and Traditions: Garifuna, an Arawakan language, resonates through the streets. Visitors can immerse themselves in Dugu ceremonies, vibrant dances, and soulful music.

3. Ak’Tenamit:

  • On a beautiful and lush setting in the Rio Tatin, a tributary of the Rio Dulce, the community of Ak-Tenamit has found a way to improve their living conditions taking advantage of their cultural heritage and incredible natural location. The Ak'Tenamit school is an example of how they have done this. It recently received 25 solar-powered laptops. The journey to deliver these laptops involved boat rides, steep hills, and unwavering determination. A visit to Ak-Tenamit involves meeting the community members to learn about their way of life, students at the school and lunch prepared by the community!

4. San Felipe Castle:

  • Historic Guardian: The Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, a Spanish colonial fort, guards the entrance to Lake Izabal. Strategically positioned, it thwarted pirate attacks, especially by English pirates. Its walls witnessed centuries of struggle and resilience.

  • UNESCO Recognition: This fort, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, draws visitors seeking a glimpse into the past. Restored after pirate raids, it stands as a testament to Guatemala’s maritime history.

In summary, Livingston beckons expedition cruise ships with its cultural fusion, natural wonders, and historical landmarks. Whether exploring the cobblestone streets, dancing to Garifuna beats, or marveling at ancient fortifications, visitors find a harmonious blend of past and present.
